On a rainy Friday, June 12, 2015, in Mishawaka, Indiana, the life of 22-year-old Precious Jackson was tragically cut short. A victim of domestic violence, she was fatally shot near the intersection of Sixth and Logan streets. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, her two toddlers were found wandering in the street nearby, having witnessed the horrific event.
The investigation quickly identified 18-year-old Tyron Johnson, the father of Jackson's one-month-old child, as the primary
suspect. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was considered armed and dangerous. The following Tuesday morning, Johnson was apprehended at the Miami Hills Apartment Complex in South Bend by the St. Joseph County Police. He was subsequently charged with murder and held at the St. Joseph County Jail without bond.
During his trial, Johnson did not deny killing Precious Jackson. He testified that they had been fighting in front of his parents' house when he pulled out a gun, which he claimed Jackson had originally purchased for his protection. After nearly seven hours of deliberation, the jury found Tyron Johnson guilty of murder. His defense attorney had argued for a lesser conviction of voluntary manslaughter, asserting that Johnson had acted in the heat of the moment, but this was rejected.
Following his conviction, Johnson was sentenced to 60 years in prison. He later appealed the conviction, seeking to have it reduced to voluntary manslaughter, which would have carried a lesser sentence. However, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld the original murder conviction, agreeing that the evidence presented at trial supported the more serious charge. Precious Jackson was the mother of four children who, according to her family, are now being raised by both families.
