In a quiet Mishawaka, Indiana neighborhood, the life of 10-year-old Sophia Burks was tragically cut short on the afternoon of Saturday, February 7, 2026. Sophia was a bright and joyful child, known for her love of playing Roblox, making slime, and doodling her name all over the house. She had a kind and welcoming heart, loved animals, and enjoyed going to school to be with her friends.
Her laughter and beautiful spirit were a light to all who knew her.
On that fateful Saturday, just before 4:30 p.m., police were called to a home in the 300 block of Taylor Street with a report of a child suffering from a gunshot wound. When they arrived, they found Sophia, who was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation by the Mishawaka Police Department, with ballistics and autopsy reports pending. It is believed to have been an accidental shooting involving a gun that had been modified for rapid fire.
In connection with the shooting, 17-year-old Jacob Olvera was arrested. Olvera was identified as the boyfriend of Sophia's older sister and did not live at the residence. The firearm involved in the incident allegedly belonged to him. Following the shooting, Olvera was taken to the Juvenile Justice Center of Saint Joseph County. He faces several preliminary charges, including possession of a machine gun, dangerous possession of a firearm, and criminal recklessness.
The case is currently being handled through the juvenile court system, although there is a possibility it could be transferred to adult court. A hearing was scheduled for March 2nd to determine whether Jacob Olvera will be tried as an adult.
