In the early morning hours of February 26, 2025, the sounds of screams and gunshots shattered the quiet of a Mishawaka, Indiana neighborhood, leaving a young woman dead and a family torn apart. Twenty-three-year-old Asia Phillip was tragically killed in the incident that unfolded in the 700 block of Division Street. She was a bright and ambitious college student at IUSB, pursuing a bachelor's degree in psychology with dreams of attending law school.
The night began with a family
gathering, a birthday party that took a dark and violent turn. An argument erupted between 45-year-old Narles Brown Sr. and his 23-year-old son, Tyrees Brown. The dispute escalated, and shortly after 2 a.m., authorities received a 911 call reporting the gunshots. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered both Asia Phillip and Tyrees Brown inside a silver Chevy Impala, each suffering from gunshot wounds.
Both victims were rushed to a local hospital for treatment. While Tyrees Brown underwent surgery and was listed in stable condition, Asia Phillip succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. At the time of her death, Asia was pregnant with a son she and Tyrees had been eagerly expecting.
Police detained Narles Brown Sr. at the scene of the shooting. Following an interview with detectives from the Mishawaka Police Department's Major Crimes Unit, he was formally charged with the murder of Asia Phillip and the attempted murder of his son, Tyrees Brown. An additional charge for a firearm enhancement was also filed against him. Authorities have stated that they believe the incident was isolated and that there is no further threat to the community.
