In the winter of 2016, the life of 19-year-old Terry Williams was tragically cut short, marking the first homicide of the year in Indianapolis. A Black male, Williams was discovered in the hallway of an east side apartment complex on January 4th, having sustained multiple gunshot wounds. The authorities immediately classified his death as a homicide, launching an investigation into the violent end of the young man's life.
The inquiry into Williams' death uncovered a history of conflict
with another man, 26-year-old Najee Givens. Investigators learned of a prior altercation at a party a month before the fatal shooting, during which Givens had discharged a firearm into an apartment wall. Ballistic analysis would later connect that same weapon to the murder of Terry Williams, solidifying Givens as the primary suspect in the case. For nearly five months, Givens remained at large, but the efforts of law enforcement eventually led to his location. He was apprehended by the U.S. Marshals Service in Canton, Ohio, and subsequently extradited back to Indianapolis to face charges for his alleged role in Williams' death.
Initially, Najee Givens was charged with the murder of Terry Williams. However, the legal proceedings took a different course. In a development that shifted the narrative of justice for Williams, the murder charge was reduced to reckless homicide as part of a plea agreement. Givens pleaded guilty to the lesser charge and received a sentence of six years. The terms of his sentence stipulated that four years would be served in prison, with the remaining two years suspended. Following a violation of the terms of his agreement, Givens ultimately served the entirety of his sentence within the Department of Correction.
