On the evening of December 5, 2019, Dewitt Dupree, a 27-year-old Black male, was found suffering from gunshot wounds in the 4800 block of East 19th Street on the east side of Indianapolis. Emergency services were called to the scene, and paramedics rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The incident was one of many criminal homicides investigated by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department that year.
Just hours before the fatal shooting,
Dupree had spent a joyful day with his mother, Shelida Deloney. They laughed and talked, creating a final, cherished memory that would soon be overshadowed by tragedy. In the days following his death, a makeshift memorial with photos, candles, and balloons was created at the site of the shooting. His mother remembered him for his infectious smile and loving nature, sharing childhood photos with the public in the hope that someone would come forward with information.
Despite his mother's heartfelt pleas for witnesses to be brave and help bring justice for her son, the case remains unsolved. She expressed her belief that people in the community have knowledge of who is responsible for Dewitt's death. As of now, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Dewitt Dupree. The investigation into his death is ongoing.
