On a spring night in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the life of 17-year-old Dontay DeWayne White, a male, was tragically cut short. The date was May 18, 2016, and Dontay, a junior at Snider High School who was studying to become an electrician, had just finished his shift at a local restaurant. His friend picked him up, and they set out to meet someone they knew as 'Michael' on Brickshire Parkway.
Once they arrived, the meeting took a terrifying turn.
A male, later identified as Michael Harding II, who was 16 at the time, entered their vehicle and brandished a gun. In a moment of bravery, Dontay's friend attempted to disarm Harding. During the ensuing struggle, the gun discharged, and a single bullet struck Dontay in the neck. He was rushed to a local hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The Allen County Coroner later officially ruled his death a homicide. For years, the case remained cold, leaving his family with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss as they waited for justice.
The break in the case finally came years later. In June 2023, police conducted a traffic stop and arrested Michael Harding II, then 24 years old. His arrest brought a renewed sense of hope to Dontay's family that they might finally see accountability for his death. Harding was charged with a slate of serious felonies, including murder, aggravated battery, robbery resulting in bodily injury, and intimidation with a deadly weapon, stemming from the events of that fateful night.
In October 2024, more than eight years after Dontay's death, Michael Harding II faced a jury and was found guilty on all counts. The verdict marked the culmination of a long and painful journey for Dontay's loved ones. Harding was subsequently sentenced to 92 years in prison, a measure of closure for a family that had endured years of uncertainty and grief over the senseless act of violence that took a promising young man's life.
