In the early morning hours of August 5, 2016, a day that should have been a celebration of his 23rd birthday, Dominique Williams was found shot to death inside a Fort Wayne, Indiana apartment. Police responded to a 911 call around 6 a.m. at the Preston Pointe Apartments on Winston Lane, where they discovered the young man's body. An autopsy would later confirm that he died from gunshot wounds to his right shoulder and chest.
The initial investigation suggested a robbery gone wrong, with another individual who was present in the apartment managing to escape unharmed and alert the authorities.
For a year and a half, the case saw little movement, leaving a void of answers for Williams' grieving family. Then, in March 2018, a significant break appeared to come with the arrest of 21-year-old Logan J. Stuth, a homeless man whom Williams had reportedly invited to stay with him. Stuth was officially charged with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of an offense. His arrest came after he provided investigators with multiple inconsistent accounts of what transpired on the morning of the shooting.
The case against Stuth was built on these inconsistencies and a statement from his own brother, who described him as mentally unstable and having expressed desires to kill someone. Initially, Stuth claimed that two unknown men had entered the apartment and shot Williams. However, his story reportedly changed during subsequent interviews with detectives. Despite the charges and the initial belief that justice was within reach, the legal proceedings took another turn.
In October 2020, following a trial in Allen Superior Court, a jury acquitted Logan Stuth of all charges, including murder and the firearm enhancement. The acquittal left the case officially unresolved and the question of who was truly responsible for Dominique Williams' death unanswered. The prosecution's case, which had once seemed to have a clear suspect, ultimately did not convince the jury beyond a reasonable doubt, leaving a painful and lingering uncertainty for all who knew and loved the 23-year-old man whose life was cut short on his birthday.
