On a warm evening in Las Vegas, the life of 50-year-old Jeffrey Johnson, a male, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence. After enjoying time at a bar with his wife and a friend on August 28, 2016, the group decided to head to the friend's house. Johnson and his wife followed in his friend's truck on their motorcycle. Upon their arrival at the corner of Imperial Avenue and Lamont Street, they noticed a man in the friend's backyard.
When confronted, the man fled.
Johnson, wanting to get a better look at the intruder, told his wife to get off the motorcycle and rode toward the fleeing man. Without any exchange of words, the man turned and shot Johnson at least twice in the head. Johnson was still wearing his helmet at the time of the shooting. He was rushed to a local hospital with critical injuries. Despite medical efforts, he was taken off life support on September 10th.
The investigation into Johnson's murder led police to 25-year-old Alonso Perez. A witness who had been with Perez that night told authorities they had smoked methamphetamine together shortly before she saw him shoot a man on a motorcycle. Perez later told her he did it because he felt like everyone was out to get him. Ballistic evidence from the scene of Johnson's shooting linked the crime to a string of other violent incidents, including two other homicides that occurred in August 2016. The victims of the other fatal shootings were identified as 31-year-old Mohammed Robinson and 37-year-old Candelario Duran.
Perez was initially arrested in connection with Robinson's death. In a dramatic turn of events, he managed to break his handcuffs and escape from a North Las Vegas police interview room. He remained at large for four days before being recaptured. Following his recapture, he was charged with the murder of Jeffrey Johnson. In October 2021, Alonso Perez pleaded guilty to the murders of Johnson, Robinson, and Duran. He was sentenced to three consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole.
