On the evening of January 18, 2018, a dispute at a park in the eastern valley of Las Vegas turned deadly for 16-year-old Jovanni Grimes, a Black/African American male. The fatal encounter took place at Lewis Family Park, located near the intersection of East Charleston Boulevard and Tree Line Drive. Authorities reported that a fight preceded the shooting, a recurring issue at the park according to city marshals.
The altercation escalated and moved to the 6400 block of American Beauty
Avenue, where Grimes was later discovered. An investigation by the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department suggested that Grimes may have exchanged gunfire with two other individuals he had been fighting with. The Clark County coroner's office later confirmed that Jovanni Grimes died from a shotgun wound to the face, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. Police also indicated that drugs might have been a contributing factor in the events that led to the shooting.
In the immediate aftermath of the incident, the two other individuals involved in the altercation fled the scene. They were described by police as being between 16 and 18 years old. They were seen leaving in a small black or dark-blue vehicle, possibly a Toyota or Honda, which was distinguished by black rims and a loud exhaust. Despite the ongoing investigation and pleas to the public for information, no arrests were immediately announced in connection with the homicide. As of the days following the shooting, the suspects remained at large, and the case was still under active investigation by homicide detectives.
