In the autumn of 2014, the life of 26-year-old John Damarcus Holman was tragically cut short in a hail of gunfire on a street in Fort Wayne, Indiana. On the evening of September 8th, Holman was inside a van on Eby Avenue when another vehicle, a black Chevrolet Tahoe, pulled up. Two individuals, later identified as Charles Benson and another man, exited the Tahoe and unleashed a barrage of bullets into Holman's van.
One of the men then approached the driver's side and fired at point-blank range.
The investigation into Holman's murder quickly led to the arrests of two men: 24-year-old Charles Benson and 25-year-old Marcus Lindsey. A third individual, Marcus Thomas, was also implicated as having allegedly ordered a 'hit' on Holman in retaliation for a prior altercation and a belief that Holman had stolen drugs and money from him.
The legal proceedings that followed took several turns. Marcus Lindsey ultimately pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of assisting a criminal. For his role in the events of that fatal night, which included helping to clean the vehicle to destroy evidence, he was sentenced to four years in prison.
The case against the alleged primary shooter, Charles Benson, who was charged with murder, fell apart before it could go to trial. A key witness in the case against him died in an unrelated incident, leaving the prosecution without sufficient evidence to proceed. As a result, the murder charge against Benson was dismissed in May 2015, and he was released from custody. There is no public record of any charges being filed against Marcus Thomas in direct connection to the death of John Damarcus Holman.
