In the autumn of 2024, the life of 17-year-old Willie Venzell Ivy III, a Black male from Fort Wayne, Indiana, was cut tragically short. Known affectionately as 'Chooch,' Willie was a junior at North Side High School and a promising football player with aspirations for college, having already received two scholarship offers. Standing at 6'1' and weighing 230 lbs., he was a formidable presence on the football field, proudly wearing jersey #99 as the team captain.
His family and friends remembered him as a loyal and loving individual with a smile that could light up any room.
On the night of Saturday, October 19, 2024, Willie attended a high school Halloween party on Manistee Drive in Fort Wayne. The party, which had been advertised on social media, quickly grew chaotic. An altercation occurred when Willie and his friends attempted to enter the house through a back door to avoid being checked for weapons. During this confrontation, Willie produced a handgun and began firing, shooting and injuring nine other people at the party, ranging in age from 14 to 20.
In the midst of the ensuing panic and chaos, one of the individuals who had been shot by Willie returned fire with his own handgun, striking him. Willie was found in the yard of a nearby home and was pronounced dead at the scene from a gunshot wound to the chest. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed his identity and cause of death.
Following an investigation by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, it was determined that the individual who shot Willie had acted in self-defense. Citing Indiana's self-defense law, prosecutors announced that no criminal charges would be filed against the shooter. While the shooting that resulted in Willie's death was deemed justified, the investigation did lead to legal consequences for the homeowner. Joanna Eastes, 42, was arrested and faced charges of Neglect of a Dependent, Furnishing Property for the Purpose of Enabling Minors to Consume Alcohol, and Contributing to the Delinquency of a Minor for her role in hosting the party where the fatal incident occurred.
