In the late summer evening of August 14, 2016, what began as a dinner with friends at a Texas Roadhouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana, ended in tragedy for 28-year-old Jeffrey Martin Lute. A dispute that had been simmering between Lute, a former member of the Steel Horse Rebels motorcycle club, and its current members violently erupted in the restaurant's parking lot.
That night, Jeffrey, a man described by loved ones as a kind-hearted and extraordinary individual, was fatally shot.
The confrontation was initiated by members of the motorcycle club who had gone to the restaurant to confront Lute. The verbal altercation quickly escalated into a physical one. At one point, Lute, who was licensed to carry a handgun, shot one of the club members in the leg. As he tried to flee, another member of the group, 29-year-old Andrew Mac Cassaday, retrieved a gun from his car. In what prosecutors would later describe as an ambush, Cassaday shot Jeffrey Lute as he came around the corner of the building. The single gunshot wound to his neck proved to be fatal, and he died at the scene.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Fort Wayne police arrested Andrew Mac Cassaday. He was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm. During his trial, Cassaday claimed he acted in self-defense. However, the prosecution successfully argued that he and his fellow club members instigated the violent confrontation. In April 2017, a jury found Andrew Cassaday guilty of murder. The following month, he was sentenced to 65 years in prison for the killing of Jeffrey Martin Lute, bringing a measure of closure to a case that tragically cut short a young man's life.
