In the summer of 2020, on the evening of July 21st, tragedy struck in Fort Wayne, Indiana, forever altering the lives of two families. Allen Lamar Ruffin, a 31-year-old man, was at his girlfriend's home on Lillie Street. While he was occupied with fixing a doorbell camera, with his back to the street, the tranquility of the evening was shattered by the sound of gunfire. Ruffin was struck by multiple bullets and was pronounced dead at the scene.
His girlfriend, who was standing in the doorway, was also shot and critically injured. The Allen County Coroner later confirmed that Ruffin's death was a homicide caused by multiple gunshot wounds. This violent act marked the 27th homicide in Allen County for that year.
The investigation into the shooting led authorities to 25-year-old Tremaine Wyatt. At the time of the shooting, Wyatt was already in the Allen County Jail on unrelated charges, having been arrested the day after the incident. Investigators uncovered a possible motive for the attack, believing it was an act of retaliation. Wyatt and his family suspected that Ruffin had been involved in a prior shooting incident at their grandmother's house. Evidence gathered included text messages sent by Wyatt before the murder, in which he allegedly mentioned having a price on Ruffin's head and asked for ammunition.
In August 2020, while still in custody, Tremaine Wyatt was formally charged with the murder of Allen Ruffin. In addition to the murder charge, he faced counts of aggravated battery for the injuries sustained by Ruffin's girlfriend, as well as criminal recklessness and a weapons charge. The legal proceedings that followed culminated in Wyatt's conviction for murder, aggravated battery, and criminal recklessness. An appeal of the conviction was later filed, but the court affirmed the initial judgment, ensuring that Wyatt would be held accountable for the fatal shooting that cut Allen Ruffin's life short.
