In the autumn of 2024, a wave of violence struck a neighborhood in Fort Wayne, Indiana, forever altering the lives of one local family. On the evening of October 3rd, 19-year-old Preston Jermere Church II, a Black/African American male, found himself in the 6000 block of Waycross Drive. It was there, near the intersection of Paulding and Hessen Cassel roads, that the sounds of gunfire shattered the evening calm.
Preston was struck by multiple bullets, sustaining injuries that would tragically prove to be fatal.
Emergency services were quickly summoned to the scene, and the gravely wounded teenager was rushed to a nearby hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Preston Jermere Church II succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The Allen County Coroner's Office would later confirm that the cause of his untimely death was indeed multiple gunshot wounds, ruling it a homicide. The incident marked another grim statistic in the city's ongoing struggle with gun violence.
In the wake of the shooting, the Fort Wayne Police Department launched a homicide investigation, canvassing the area for evidence and seeking to piece together the events that led to the fatal encounter.
