On September 28, 2019, a violent tragedy unfolded in Fort Wayne, Indiana, claiming the life of 23-year-old Jaylin Lorenzo Robinson, a Black male resident of the city. Known to friends and family for his charismatic personality and love for music and sports, Robinson had arrived that evening at the Broadway Grill, a local establishment situated at 1420 Broadway. He pulled into the parking lot in a dark blue Chevrolet Impala, seemingly unaware of the fatal confrontation that awaited him.
Surveillance footage captured the moments leading up to the shooting, showing Robinson approaching a group of men standing outside the venue. Among the group was Michael O. Anderson Jr., a man who would later be identified as the primary suspect. The video evidence depicted what initially appeared to be a cordial interaction, with Robinson and Anderson exchanging a handshake. However, the situation abruptly turned deadly when Anderson drew a firearm and fired multiple shots at Robinson, fatally wounding him in the parking lot.
The Fort Wayne Police Department launched a swift investigation, utilizing both video recordings and tips from the community to track down the assailant. A K9 unit played a crucial role in the search, locating discarded clothing that matched the outfit worn by the shooter in the surveillance footage. Subsequent forensic analysis confirmed Anderson's DNA was present on the items, solidifying the connection. At the time charges were filed, Anderson was already in custody at the Allen County Jail for an unrelated parole violation.
In January 2023, the case proceeded to trial in the Allen Superior Court. Prosecutors presented the compilation of video and DNA evidence to a jury, who ultimately returned a guilty verdict against Michael O. Anderson Jr. He was convicted of murder and an additional count for using a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following the conviction, Anderson faced a substantial prison term, with guidelines suggesting a sentence spanning several decades for his role in the untimely death of Jaylin Robinson.
