In the early morning hours of October 7, 2016, the life of 36-year-old Joseph S. Schroeder came to a violent end in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The events that led to his death began to unfold when Fort Wayne police officers Anthony Shefferly and Cameron Norris responded to a call about a shooting at a residence on Story Run. Upon their arrival, they encountered Schroeder, who was armed with a knife.
The situation quickly escalated when Schroeder grabbed a three-year-old child and barricaded
himself inside the house, initiating a tense standoff with law enforcement that would last for six hours. Crisis negotiators attempted to communicate with Schroeder, using a loudspeaker and eventually establishing phone contact. During these conversations, Schroeder made threats that he intended to harm the young child he was holding hostage.
As the standoff wore on and with the child's life believed to be in imminent danger, the police department's Emergency Services Team made the decision to breach the home. Upon entering, they found Schroeder standing over the three-year-old with knives. In response to this immediate threat, officers fired their weapons, fatally wounding Schroeder. The child was rescued and was physically unharmed.
Following the incident, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office conducted an investigation into the officer-involved shooting. The prosecutor later announced that the officers' actions were justified. It was determined that they had a reasonable belief that deadly force was necessary to prevent serious bodily injury or the death of the child. As a result of this finding, no criminal charges were filed against the officers involved in the death of Joseph S. Schroeder.
