In the summer of 2022, a domestic dispute in a quiet Fort Wayne, Indiana neighborhood escalated into a tragedy that claimed two lives. On the morning of July 19, 2022, an argument between 47-year-old Thin Thin Khaing, a woman of Burmese ethnicity, and her husband, Than Zaw Oo, turned violent inside their Willshire Estates Drive home. The confrontation culminated in Than Zaw Oo shooting his wife multiple times.
Despite suffering from life-threatening injuries, Khaing managed to escape the
residence and sought help from a neighbor, who promptly called for emergency services. She was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. While medical personnel fought to save her, Khaing succumbed to her injuries four days later, on July 23, 2022. The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that her death was a result of multiple gunshot wounds and officially ruled it a homicide. Her death marked the 15th homicide in the city of Fort Wayne that year.
Following the shooting, Than Zaw Oo barricaded himself inside their home. The Fort Wayne Police Department responded in force, deploying their Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team, and Air Support Units to the scene. Despite their attempts to negotiate and de-escalate the situation, law enforcement was unable to make contact with him. Before officers could intervene, Than Zaw Oo took his own life with a rifle. His death was subsequently ruled a suicide by the coroner's office. The investigation into the murder-suicide was handled by the Fort Wayne Police Department, the Allen County Prosecutor's Office, and the Allen County Coroner's Office.
