In the quiet city of Fort Wayne, Indiana, a heartbreaking incident unfolded on September 25, 2020, leading to the death of 89-year-old Toma T. Davis. The unfortunate event, which has since been classified as a homicide-suicide, also involved his 57-year-old stepson, Hawatheven L. Davis.
That evening, at approximately 5:45 p.m., Fort Wayne police officers were dispatched to a residence in the 2800 block of South Hanna Street following a report of a shooting.
Upon their arrival, they discovered both Toma and Hawatheven suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the immediate response, both men were pronounced dead at the scene.
Subsequent autopsies brought clarity to the tragic circumstances. The Allen County Coroner's Office determined that Toma T. Davis died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was officially ruled a homicide. In contrast, Hawatheven L. Davis's death was a result of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a suicide.
Given the nature of the incident as a homicide-suicide, the investigation concluded that Hawatheven L. Davis was the sole perpetrator. Consequently, no arrests were made, and the case did not proceed to trial as there were no other suspects. The motive behind the shooting has not been publicly disclosed by the authorities, leaving the community to mourn the loss of both individuals in this tragic event. Funeral services for Toma T. Davis were held at Union Baptist Church, and he was laid to rest at Concordia Cemetery.
