In the autumn of 2021, a visit to a friend's home in Fort Wayne, Indiana, turned into a scene of violence that claimed the life of 28-year-old Benyamin Jovon McQuiller Jr. On the evening of Sunday, October 17th, McQuiller, a Black male, arrived at the Wells Street Mobile Home Court with a female companion. Shortly after their arrival, another man appeared and shattered the calm of the evening by opening fire on them.
In the ensuing chaos, McQuiller was fatally shot.
The Allen County Coroner's Office would later confirm that his death was a homicide resulting from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His female companion was also struck by gunfire but sustained non-life-threatening injuries. In a desperate struggle for the weapon, the gunman was also shot.
The alleged shooter, identified as Lige James Johnson, a 30-year-old white male from Woodburn, Indiana, was critically injured during the altercation. He was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead. The coroner determined Johnson's cause of death to be exsanguination from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death was also ruled a homicide. The incident was investigated by the Fort Wayne Police Department and the Allen County Prosecutor's Office. As the identified suspect in the shooting that killed Benyamin Jovon McQuiller Jr. died at the hospital, there were no subsequent arrests in the case.
