In the early hours of November 21, 2021, Andre Carter, a 36-year-old Black male from Mississippi, was shot and killed in Mobile, Alabama. Carter and a second victim, 23-year-old Dwan Williams, were found deceased inside an SUV on the 6200 block of Rangeline Road. Investigators determined the two men were returning to Mississippi after having been at a nightclub in Prichard, where an altercation had occurred. Around 3:20 a.m., someone shot into their vehicle. Surveillance footage captured the aftermath, showing the SUV making a U-turn before stopping abruptly in the northbound lanes. The video then showed three individuals getting out of the vehicle and walking away. When police arrived, they found Carter and Williams inside, both having died from gunshot wounds.

For nearly two years, the case remained a painful mystery for the victims' families. Then, in October 2023, the Mobile Police Department announced a major breakthrough. Ardis Perez, 28, was arrested in California by the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department and extradited to Mobile. He was charged with two counts of murder and two counts of discharging a firearm into an occupied vehicle. The following month, a second suspect was taken into custody. Keith Renard Richmond, 33, also from California, was arrested and charged with two counts of murder for his role in the deaths. The arrests brought a sense of relief to the families, who felt they were finally a step closer to justice.

The case proceeded to trial in early 2025. On February 13, 2025, as his co-defendant’s trial was set to begin, Keith Richmond pleaded guilty to two counts of murder. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison for his role in the killings.

On the same day Richmond entered his plea, a Mobile County jury found Ardis Perez guilty on two counts of murder for the deaths of Andre Carter and Dwan Williams. On May 27, 2025, a judge sentenced Perez to two life sentences in prison, to be served concurrently.
