In the late evening hours of August 15, 2017, a tragedy unfolded in the parking lot of a HomeGoods distribution center in Brownsburg, Indiana, that would claim the life of a young father. Jesus Huesca, a 26-year-old male, was shot and critically injured as he arrived for work at approximately 10:10 p.m. Another individual, 22-year-old Alicia Canise Canizales, was also wounded in the attack. First responders found Huesca unresponsive, having sustained a gunshot wound to the head.
He was rushed to IU Health Methodist Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting launched a widespread and urgent manhunt. Before being taken to the hospital, Canizales was able to identify the shooter as Cristhian Garcia. This critical piece of information set off an intensive search for Garcia, which grew more desperate as authorities realized he may have taken Canizales' three young children. An AMBER Alert was issued, amplifying the search and raising public concern for the safety of the children. The search involved multiple police agencies and included the execution of search warrants at locations where Garcia was thought to be hiding.
The manhunt came to a close the following day when Garcia was apprehended during a traffic stop in downtown Indianapolis. The three children were found with him, unharmed, bringing a sense of relief to the community. The investigation also led to the arrest of a second suspect, Julio Cesar Bonilla. Authorities alleged that Bonilla was the driver of the vehicle used in the commission of the crime. Both Garcia and Bonilla were subsequently charged with murder and attempted murder. While the exact motive for the shooting was not officially released, it was reported that Garcia had been in a domestic relationship with Canizales. Jesus Huesca was remembered by his family as a devoted father to his 21-month-old daughter and the backbone of their family, a man who would do anything for others.
