In the early morning hours of March 5, 2025, the typical quiet of a Brownsburg, Indiana neighborhood was shattered by the sound of gunshots. When police arrived at the 300 block of Acre Avenue, they discovered a grim scene inside a Dodge Durango. Two men from Indianapolis, 25-year-old Zachary Johnson and 19-year-old Lucas Brearley, were found deceased in the vehicle. Another man, 21-year-old Logan Huffine, was found injured in the front yard of a nearby home, yelling for help.
A fourth individual, 20-year-old Gavin Ramirez, had fled the scene.
The investigation that followed unraveled a story that began with a visit to friends in Brownsburg. Johnson, Brearley, Huffine, and Ramirez were all at the home of Nicholas Hensley and Heaven Charnes-McCarrell. During their visit, Johnson and Huffine, while armed, engaged in several thefts from vehicles and properties in the area. The situation escalated when Johnson accidentally discharged his firearm back at their friends' residence, which resulted in all four men being asked to leave.
Once inside Huffine's Durango, a heated argument erupted between Johnson and Brearley, who were both in the backseat. The verbal dispute turned into a physical altercation, culminating in Brearley drawing a firearm and shooting Johnson multiple times, killing him. In response, Huffine, who was driving the vehicle, turned and shot Brearley multiple times, resulting in his death.
After a thorough investigation, the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office determined that Huffine acted in defense of himself and Johnson when he shot Brearley. Consequently, no murder charges were filed in connection with the double homicide. However, this did not mean the individuals involved were free of legal repercussions. Though the specific charges for each individual were not detailed, it was reported that four people faced charges related to the incidents of that night, including theft.
