In the early morning hours of March 5, 2025, the community of Brownsburg, Indiana, was disturbed by the sound of gunfire. Responding to the noise, officers from the Brownsburg Police Department discovered a grim scene in the 300 block of Acre Avenue. Inside a Dodge Durango, two young men from Indianapolis were found dead from gunshot wounds. One of the victims was identified as 19-year-old male, Lucas Brearley.
The other man was 25-year-old Zachary Johnson.
The investigation into the double homicide revealed a complex sequence of events that unfolded among a group of acquaintances. Brearley, Johnson, and two other men, Logan Huffine and another 20-year-old, had traveled to Brownsburg to visit friends. The situation escalated after Johnson and Huffine allegedly engaged in stealing from cars while armed. An accidental discharge of Johnson's firearm inside the friends' home led to the four men being asked to leave.
After the four men got into Huffine's vehicle, a violent altercation broke out in the back seat between Johnson and Brearley. According to the police investigation, Brearley drew a gun and shot Johnson multiple times, killing him. In response, Huffine, who was driving the SUV, turned and shot Brearley multiple times, resulting in his death. A third man, who was a front-seat passenger, fled the scene after the shooting. Police later found Huffine, who had also been shot, in the front yard of a nearby home calling for help.
Following a thorough investigation and in consultation with the Hendricks County Prosecutor's Office, it was determined that Logan Huffine would not face murder charges. Investigators concluded that Huffine acted in defense of himself and the already deceased Zachary Johnson when he shot Brearley. While no murder charges were filed in the deaths, four individuals between the ages of 20 and 22 are facing other charges connected to the deadly incident.
