In the late summer of 2017, a family dispute in Muncie, Indiana, culminated in the tragic death of 17-year-old Allayzia Jackson-Johnson. The young female, known to her loved ones as 'Laay,' was fatally shot on August 31, 2017. Her life was cut short in a confrontation that erupted in the tense aftermath of a court hearing.
The chain of events leading to Allayzia's death began after the sentencing of her brother, Deshaun Jackson.
Tensions were high between family members who supported Deshaun and a relative, Marilyn Wilson, who had testified against him at his trial. Following the hearing, where Deshaun Jackson was sentenced to 25 years, a group of his supporters, including Allayzia, surrounded Wilson's car in the courthouse parking lot.
The situation quickly escalated when Allayzia Jackson-Johnson reportedly reached through an open window of Wilson's vehicle and punched her. In response to the perceived threat, Marilyn Wilson, who was 43 at the time, discharged a firearm. Allayzia was struck in the chest by the gunfire and was later pronounced dead at IU Health Ball Memorial Hospital.
In the wake of the shooting, the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office conducted an investigation into the incident. After reviewing the evidence, the chief deputy prosecutor announced in December 2017 that Marilyn Wilson would not face criminal charges. The decision was based on the legal principle of self-defense. The prosecutor noted that the tense atmosphere was evident even before the shooting, as armed courthouse security had felt it necessary to escort Wilson and a male companion to their vehicle. The investigation concluded that Wilson acted in self-defense during the physical altercation initiated by Jackson-Johnson.
