On Friday, November 3, 2023, officers with the Muncie Police Department were dispatched to a residence on the west side of Muncie, Indiana, to conduct a welfare check. A concerned individual had contacted emergency services after being unable to reach one of the occupants of the home. Upon arrival, law enforcement entered the property, noting that there were no signs of forced entry or struggle at the exterior of the house.
Inside, they discovered the bodies of three individuals, marking the beginning of a death investigation that would later be clarified by medical examiners.
Among the deceased was 45-year-old female Sarah R. Barnes, who was found alongside her father, 76-year-old Douglas L. Starr, and a third individual identified as 32-year-old Kevin L. Humphrey. The discovery prompted an immediate investigation by local detectives and the Delaware County Coroner’s Office to determine the sequence of events that led to the tragedy. Police initially stated that there was no active threat to the community, suggesting the incident was contained within the residence.
Subsequent findings by the coroner revealed that the deaths were the result of a murder-suicide. The investigation determined that Kevin L. Humphrey died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, while Sarah R. Barnes and Douglas L. Starr had been shot and killed. Authorities concluded that Humphrey was the sole suspect in the shootings of Barnes and Starr before turning the weapon on himself. Because the perpetrator was deceased at the scene, no arrests were made, and the case was closed without a criminal trial.
