In late April 2019, the quiet Farmington neighborhood of Muncie, Indiana, became the scene of a tragic discovery that shook the local community. On the afternoon of Sunday, April 28, police were called to a residence on the 5000 block of West Timothy Way after a family member entered the home and found a horrific scene. Inside, authorities located the bodies of three individuals who had died from gunshot wounds.
Among the victims was 14-year-old female Rylee Ritchie, an eighth-grade student at Delta Middle School known for her artistic talent and love of reading, and her mother, 45-year-old Denise Miles.
Investigators determined that the violence had occurred sometime between Wednesday, April 24, and Saturday, April 27, days before the bodies were found. Forensic evidence revealed that Rylee had been shot twice in the chest, while her mother suffered two gunshot wounds to the back. Both deaths were ruled homicides. The investigation quickly pointed to a domestic perpetrator within the home, as there was no evidence of forced entry or an outside intruder.
The sole suspect identified in the case was 58-year-old Casey Ritchie, Rylee’s father and Denise’s partner. Police concluded that Casey had intentionally killed both his daughter and her mother before turning the weapon on himself. He was found deceased at the scene from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, and his death was ruled a suicide. Because the perpetrator took his own life, the Delaware County Prosecutor’s Office announced that no criminal charges would be filed, officially closing the criminal investigation into the double murder-suicide.
In the wake of the violence, Rylee’s older sister, Brandi Ritchie, filed wrongful death lawsuits against her father's estate, seeking damages for the loss of her family members. The community rallied around the remaining family, holding a vigil outside the home to offer support and mourn the loss of the young teenager and her mother. Rylee was remembered by teachers and peers for her intelligence and creativity, with her art teacher establishing a school award in her memory to honor students who possess unique and quiet talents.
