In Gary, Indiana, a night of celebration turned into a tragedy that ended the life of 25-year-old Isaiah De’Quan Carter on March 31, 2018. Remembered as a man with a good heart who was a protective figure for his family and a positive influence on his peers, Carter, a Black male, was brutally murdered, leaving his community and loved ones in profound grief.
On that fateful evening, Carter attended a party in the Miller area of Gary.
According to his mother, Inez Carter-Berry, a dispute occurred when he tried to re-enter the venue to retrieve his keys and cell phone. Following this altercation, where he was reportedly attacked by a group of males, Carter left the party. As he drove home, he was pursued by two vehicles. The occupants of those cars opened fire, striking Carter's vehicle from behind and the side, inflicting fatal wounds.
Isaiah, also known as 'Izzy,' was a graduate of Lew Wallace High School, class of 2011, where he had been a notable basketball player and cross-country track athlete at his previous school, William A. Wirt High School. He was employed at Chicago Steel Co. and had earned a certification as a Certified Production Technician from Ivy Tech College.
In the wake of his death, Carter's family has been vocal about their loss and the violent circumstances surrounding it. His mother initiated a fundraising campaign to help with his burial expenses. Despite the passage of time, public information regarding any arrests or the identification of suspects in the murder of Isaiah Carter remains scarce. The investigation into his death continues, leaving a community still searching for answers and justice for a life cut short.
