Rheyshaun Roberts was a 21-year-old Black male resident of Indianapolis, Indiana, whose life was cut short on the evening of May 26, 2018. He was employed at a McDonald's restaurant located on the city's west side, specifically near the intersection of 16th Street and Tibbs Avenue. On the night of the incident, Roberts was taking a break from his shift when he was confronted by an individual in what began as a dispute over a minor monetary issue.
The altercation reportedly stemmed from a
disagreement involving a customer who was angry over a sum of five dollars. The situation escalated rapidly when the disgruntled customer, who had left the premises, returned to the location. The confrontation turned violent, and Roberts was shot. Emergency responders were called to the scene, which some reports identified as the parking lot of a nearby CVS pharmacy adjacent to the fast-food establishment. Despite efforts to save him, Roberts succumbed to his injuries, marking a tragic end to a dispute that had originated in a drive-thru lane.
Following the shooting, a police investigation was launched to identify and apprehend the shooter. Authorities eventually arrested a male suspect in connection with the homicide. The legal proceedings culminated more than a year later, on October 25, 2019. The accused individual reached a plea agreement with prosecutors, pleading guilty to the charge of voluntary manslaughter, a reduction from the initial murder charge. As a result of the plea, the court handed down a sentence of six years to be served in the Department of Correction, followed by three and a half years in community corrections.
