In Indianapolis, Indiana, on the evening of Friday, September 28, 2018, a transaction arranged through an online marketplace turned into a fatal encounter for a Black male resident of Westfield named Tykece DeJaun Mike-Jones. The 25-year-old had traveled to the city's north side with his girlfriend, Casey Alexander, intending to sell an iPhone to a buyer they had connected with via the "LetGo" mobile application.
The meeting was set to take place at the Hampton Court Apartments, located near the intersection of 75th Street and Ditch Road.
Upon their arrival at the apartment complex around 6:30 p.m., the couple met with a man who posed as the potential buyer. During the interaction, the individual suddenly snatched the phone from the victim's possession and fled the scene on foot. When Mike-Jones gave chase in an attempt to retrieve his property, a second individual emerged from a concealed area, reportedly from behind a dumpster or similar structure, and opened fire. Mike-Jones was struck multiple times by the gunfire. He was subsequently transported to St. Vincent Hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his injuries.
Law enforcement officials from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation, identifying two male suspects involved in the robbery and shooting. Detectives noted that neither the victim nor the suspects appeared to be residents of the apartment complex where the crime occurred. Despite the initial search for the two men—one who stole the phone and the other who fired the weapon—no arrests were immediately made. According to public records and crime databases updated as recently as late 2025, the case remains classified as unsolved with no suspects in custody. The victim's family and girlfriend have publicly sought justice, emphasizing that the violence stemmed from the theft of a single cell phone.
