In the early morning hours of July 27, 2019, the life of 33-year-old Jamarkus Allen Kindred was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Responding to a call about an unresponsive man, police discovered Kindred in a grassy area near the intersection of Lafayette and East Williams Street. He had sustained gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Allen County Coroner's Office later confirmed that his death was a homicide, marking the 14th such case in the county that year.
The investigation into Kindred's death led detectives to an after-hours club operating out of a nearby building. Neighbors reported hearing loud music from the location, followed by the sound of six to seven gunshots. As the investigation progressed, authorities released images of three individuals they wanted to question. This eventually led to the identification of a suspect, Demetre Payton, who was 27 at the time.
In September 2020, Demetre Payton was formally charged with the murder of Jamarkus Allen Kindred. He was already incarcerated at the Allen County Jail on an unrelated weapons charge when the murder warrant was served. During his trial, Payton claimed he acted in self-defense.
Surveillance footage presented in court captured the final moments of Kindred's life. The video showed an interaction between Payton and Kindred in a parking lot behind the club. In the footage, Payton could be seen raising a handgun and firing at Kindred, who then fell to the ground. Payton continued to shoot at Kindred before getting back into his vehicle. This evidence played a crucial role in the legal proceedings that followed.
