In the early morning hours of December 2, 2020, the life of 23-year-old Hakeem Omer Cage was tragically cut short in Fort Wayne, Indiana. A graduate of South Side High School who had gone on to study psychology at Indiana Tech, Hakeem was known for his love of basketball, music, and his strong will. Originally from Kankakee, Illinois, he had moved to Fort Wayne in 2012 and was a beloved figure among his friends and family.
On that fateful morning, around 4 a.m., police responded to
reports of shots fired at The Summit at Ridgewood Apartments complex. There, they discovered Hakeem outside an apartment building with a gunshot wound to the head. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The investigation that followed painted a grim picture of a robbery gone horribly wrong.
The night of the incident, Hakeem had been at a party where he had openly displayed a significant amount of cash. This act unfortunately drew the attention of 17-year-old Javon Thomas and his cousin, Korta Thomas. As Hakeem walked to his apartment with his girlfriend, Javon Thomas ambushed him, shooting him multiple times before taking his money and fleeing the scene with Korta Thomas driving the getaway vehicle.
The Fort Wayne Police Department worked diligently to piece together the events of that morning. Their investigation led to a significant break in the case on December 23, 2020, when Javon Thomas was apprehended during a traffic stop. He was subsequently charged with Hakeem's murder. Following his arrest, Javon Thomas pleaded guilty to the murder charge. He was sentenced to 55 years in prison, with 10 years of the sentence suspended, bringing a measure of justice for the senseless killing of Hakeem Omer Cage.
