In the late summer of 2019, the life of a promising young man, Shane Latrell Spells, was tragically cut short. On the evening of September 1, 2019, the 24-year-old male was fatally shot on the northwest side of Indianapolis in the 5500 block of Broadmoor Plaza. Spells, who had recently graduated from college, was a federal employee, working for the postal service.
His death left his close-knit family, including his parents Shawn and Duane, grappling with immense grief and a search for answers that would stretch on for years.
Described by his mother as 'fun, loving, humble, kind, generous, respectful,' Shane was a man who 'never met a stranger.' His family remembered him as someone who would not hesitate to speak up against wrongdoing and would always help someone in need. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community, leaving friends and loved ones to mourn a life full of potential that was extinguished far too soon. In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department detectives canvassed the area for witnesses, but were met with a wall of silence, a 'street code' that hindered their investigation from the outset.
Months turned into a year, and despite the ongoing efforts of law enforcement, no arrests were made and no suspects were publicly identified in Shane's murder. His case, while remaining an active investigation, grew cold. Shane's family has repeatedly made public pleas for anyone with information to come forward, expressing the pain of not knowing who is responsible for their son's death and the fear that the killer could be someone they pass on the street.
