On the evening of June 29, 2022, Derian Lemont Watson, a 20-year-old Black male from Indianapolis, Indiana, became the victim of a violent sequence of events on the city's northwest side. Around 6:00 p.m., officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department were dispatched to the 3700 block of Guion Road, near the intersection of West 38th Street and Lafayette Road, following reports of a person shot.
Upon arriving at the scene, first responders discovered a chaotic situation involving two vehicles that had crashed.
Investigators determined that the incident involved gunfire which likely precipitated the collision. Watson was found at the scene suffering from gunshot wounds and was in critical condition. He was immediately transported by emergency medical personnel to a local hospital for treatment. Despite medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, June 30, 2022. The Marion County Coroner’s Office later ruled his death a homicide. Two other individuals were also injured during the incident; one man was shot and hospitalized in stable condition, while a third individual sustained non-life-threatening injuries believed to be caused by broken glass from the crash.
Homicide detectives assumed control of the investigation, canvassing the area for witnesses and evidence. Public updates following the shooting indicated that police had not immediately identified a specific suspect, and no arrests were reported in the immediate aftermath of the crime. Authorities urged anyone with information regarding the circumstances of the shooting to contact the department or submit tips anonymously, as the case remained under active investigation with the motive and those responsible yet to be publicly identified.
