Investigators described the discovery as the result of a specific tip received that morning, sending police and a crime lab van to the eastbound I-465 ramp to southbound U.S. 31. In the wooded area between the Super 8 Motel and the ramp leading toward East Street and U.S. 31, officers pushed roughly 75 feet into the brush and located the remains. Police noted the area was known to attract homeless camping at times, but said there were no camps near where the remains were found.
Before the bones were recovered, there had already been unease around that same patch of woods. Police said they were called to the area weeks earlier after a report that someone had spotted a body, but officers initially left without locating it. Days later, an anonymous call again pointed toward skeletal remains near the motel, and this time the search ended with the grim confirmation that something had been left there to be hidden by weeds and time.
