In the early hours of August 6, 2018, in Indianapolis, Indiana, a verbal dispute between acquaintances escalated into a fatal encounter, ending the life of 31-year-old Roberto Cisneros. The male victim was found unresponsive with apparent gunshot wounds in the 1600 block of Harlan Street and was pronounced dead at the scene by emergency medical personnel.
The evening began with a social gathering at a home on Harlan Street, where Cisneros was present with friends, including Antonio
Jones, who was 24 at the time, and Jones's mother, who was Cisneros's longtime girlfriend. Accounts from that night suggest that while the group was socializing, a bickering argument between Cisneros and his girlfriend was ongoing.
Later in the evening, the argument intensified. After Cisneros and Jones's mother went out to her car, Jones followed with a rifle. Inside the vehicle, the verbal altercation continued, culminating in Cisneros demanding that Jones exit the car. At that point, Jones raised the rifle and shot Cisneros multiple times. Witnesses outside the car screamed for him to stop, but after a brief pause, Jones fired again. Cisneros was struck five times, with wounds to his back, chest, neck, arm, and hand. Following the shooting, Jones and his mother fled the scene.
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department homicide detectives investigated the incident, gathering witness statements which led them to identify Antonio Jones as the suspect. An arrest warrant for murder was issued, and on August 22, 2018, U.S. Marshals apprehended Jones.
Antonio Jones stood trial for the murder of Roberto Cisneros. During the bench trial, he admitted to shooting Cisneros but claimed it was in terror after they had 'tussled' for the weapon. However, the court found him guilty of murder. On March 5, 2020, Antonio Jones was sentenced to 58 years in prison for the crime.
