The evening of June 3, 2022, unfolded tragically for Darrell Lamont Ransom Jr., a 44-year-old Black male residing in Indianapolis, Indiana. Just before 10:30 p.m., police officers were dispatched to a residence on North Dearborn Street following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, first responders discovered Ransom inside the home suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate efforts of emergency personnel to save him, he had sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation quickly pieced together the events leading up to the homicide, aided significantly by witness accounts and electronic monitoring data. Ransom's son, who was upstairs at the time, reported hearing his father speaking with a visitor. When the son went downstairs, he observed a man dressed in a gray sweatshirt and sweatpants conversing with Ransom. After the son returned upstairs, the conversation deteriorated into a heated argument followed by the sound of gunfire. Another witness, who had accompanied the visitor to the area, later testified that the dispute arose over a narcotics transaction; the purchaser was reportedly dissatisfied with the quality of the product he had bought earlier that night and had returned to confront the seller.
Detectives identified the suspect as 32-year-old David Ice. Law enforcement was able to place Ice at the scene with precision because he was wearing a GPS ankle monitor at the time of the killing. Ice was on court-ordered monitoring as part of a plea agreement for prior felony charges, including battery and auto theft. The tracking data showed him in the vicinity of the North Dearborn Street home when the shooting occurred. Authorities located and arrested Ice approximately five hours after the incident at a residence on Oliver Avenue.
In October 2024, David Ice stood trial for the murder. During the two-day proceeding, prosecutors presented the GPS evidence and witness testimony linking him to the crime. The jury returned a guilty verdict on October 23, 2024. The following month, Ice appeared in court for sentencing, where a judge handed down a 78-year prison term. This sentence included enhancements for using a firearm in the commission of the crime and for being a habitual offender, ensuring a lengthy incarceration for the fatal shooting.
