In the early hours of a Sunday morning on May 31, 2020, tragedy struck on the northeast side of Indianapolis. William Scott III, a 30-year-old Black male, was caught in a burst of gunfire that would abruptly end his life. The incident unfolded shortly before 2:30 a.m. on the 3700 block of Orchard Avenue, a residential street that was soon to become a crime scene.
When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived, they discovered a grim scene.
Two men had been shot. Medics were unable to save William Scott III, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The second victim, who has not been identified publicly, was rushed to a local hospital in critical condition, his life hanging in the balance. The Marion County Coroner's Office would later confirm that Scott's death was a homicide.
In the wake of the shooting, IMPD homicide detectives began the arduous task of piecing together what happened. They interviewed witnesses and, with the assistance of the Marion County Forensic Services Agency, collected evidence from the scene. Despite their efforts, the investigation has yet to yield any arrests. No suspects have been publicly identified in connection with the double shooting that left one man dead and another fighting for his life. The case remains an open and unsolved homicide.
