On the morning of March 1, 1998, authorities in Moncton, New Brunswick, responded to a distressing call reporting a double homicide. Upon arrival at a basement apartment, police discovered the bodies of 48-year-old Joan Hicks and her 11-year-old daughter, Nina Hicks. Joan Hicks had suffered multiple stab wounds, and her throat had been slashed. Her daughter, 11-year-old Nina Hicks, was found strangled and hanging in her bedroom closet.
