In the early hours of July 5, 2020, a young mother's life was cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana, leaving a family searching for answers that have yet to come. Jessica Doty Whitaker, a 24-year-old female, was walking along the Indianapolis Canal Walk with her fiancé, Jose Ramirez, and two friends when a contentious argument erupted with another group of people.
The confrontation, which occurred around 3 a.m., would ultimately lead to her tragic death.
According to Ramirez, the dispute began after someone in his group used a slang version of a racial slur. This prompted a reaction from a nearby group of strangers. Ramirez stated that the other group shouted 'Black Lives Matter,' to which someone in Whitaker's group, and possibly Whitaker herself, responded with 'All Lives Matter.' The verbal altercation escalated to the point where individuals from both groups, including Ramirez, reportedly drew firearms. The initial confrontation de-escalated, and the two groups parted ways.
Minutes after the initial argument, as Whitaker and her companions walked under a bridge, shots were fired from a distance. Whitaker was struck by the gunfire and collapsed. Her fiancé, Jose Ramirez, returned fire, though he later stated he did not see who he was shooting at. Jessica Doty Whitaker was rushed to a nearby hospital, but she succumbed to her injuries, leaving behind her young son.
In the wake of the shooting, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department launched a homicide investigation. Detectives released surveillance footage showing potential witnesses and persons of interest who were in the area at the time of the incident. Despite these efforts and the pleas of Whitaker's family for witnesses to come forward, no arrests have been publicly announced in connection with her murder. The family has voiced their belief that the shooting was a hate crime and has called for the FBI to get involved in the investigation.
