In the late hours of April 1, 2026, the life of 21-year-old Rebecca June Carter was tragically cut short in a shooting on the east side of Indianapolis. The incident occurred around 11:45 p.m. in the 500 block of Carlyle Place, near Michigan Street and Emerson Avenue. When officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department arrived at the residence, they found Rebecca with a gunshot wound.
She was immediately transported to a local hospital in critical condition, where she ultimately succumbed to her injuries.
Remembered as a vibrant and energetic soul, Rebecca, or "Becca" as she was affectionately known, was born and raised on the west side of Indianapolis. She was known for her tenacious spirit, fun-loving personality, and a deep compassion for animals. For years, she had worked as a server, most recently at a Waffle House in Avon, where her sense of humor and sweet laugh brightened the days of both coworkers and customers. Her passing left a void in the lives of her extensive family, including her beloved brother, with whom she shared a close bond, her parents, and numerous siblings.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, investigators began to piece together the events of that fateful night. It was revealed that there were other individuals present in the home at the time of the incident, including a juvenile and two very young children. Initially, the shooting was preliminarily considered to be accidental. A person of interest was detained at the scene and later arrested in connection with Rebecca's death.
The individual arrested was identified as Louis Jenkins Jr., who was subsequently charged with one count of reckless homicide. According to court documents that later emerged, Jenkins was identified as Rebecca's boyfriend. A juvenile witness reportedly told police they saw Rebecca holding Jenkins' gun just before the fatal shot was fired. The investigation continued as the criminal justice process began, leaving a grieving family and community to mourn the sudden and heartbreaking loss of a young woman whose life was just beginning.
