On the early morning of October 4, 2020, a violent outburst of gunfire shattered the night along the 5300 block of Massachusetts Avenue in Indianapolis, Indiana. The incident occurred just after 3:00 a.m. near the intersection with Ritter Avenue, outside a venue known as The Grand nightclub. Police officers from the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department responded to reports of shots fired and arrived to find a chaotic scene with a large crowd gathering and multiple victims suffering from
gunshot wounds.
Among those discovered at the scene was 32-year-old Juan De Andre Reveria, a male born in Gary, Indiana. Juan had been enjoying the weekend hours when the shooting erupted. He was found unresponsive and was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. Born on June 10, 1988, Juan was known to his family and friends as a humble and expressive individual who loved 'kicking it' with his inner circle. He was an avid sports fan, particularly of basketball and football, and had played sports during his youth for the Gary Community School Corporation and later for Muncie Central High School, from which he graduated in 2007. At the time of his death, he had been employed at Subaru Car Manufacturing and had previously worked for ten years at Save More Foods. He left behind a grieving family, including his mother, sister, and an unborn child.
The violence that claimed Juan's life also resulted in the deaths of two other individuals: 27-year-old James William Upshaw and 33-year-old Shanya E. Jones. All three victims died from their injuries at the location of the shooting. Additionally, four other people were injured in the melee and later arrived at Community Hospital East in stable condition. Investigators collected at least 50 shell casings from the ground, indicating a high volume of gunfire exchanged during the disturbance.
Despite the heavy police presence and the investigation that followed, the case has faced significant challenges. Detectives initially described the shooting as an isolated incident involving a disturbance between groups, but they did not immediately identify a specific suspect. In the years following the tragedy, including updates as late as 2025, no arrests have been made in connection with the triple homicide. The case remains unsolved, with authorities having urged witnesses from the large crowd present that night to come forward with information that could lead to a conviction. No suspects have been publicly named or charged for the murders of Juan Reveria, James Upshaw, and Shanya Jones.
