In the quiet city of Anderson, Indiana, the life of 17-year-old Andon Jo Oliver was tragically cut short on the cold evening of January 3, 2021. The young man, known for his love of fishing, basketball, and working on his Mustang, was fatally shot in what authorities described as a botched drug deal.
The incident unfolded around 9:15 p.m. near the Fairview Apartments on Sun Valley Drive.
According to a witness, Andon was in his car, preparing to sell marijuana to a 16-year-old named De'torio Fleming. As he was measuring the marijuana, Fleming approached the vehicle's window, produced a gun, and shot Andon in the chest.
Following the shooting, Fleming fled the scene. Andon was found gravely wounded and was rushed to Ascension St. Vincent Anderson Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The tragic event sent shockwaves through the community and left his family and many friends heartbroken.
The day after the shooting, De'torio Fleming turned himself into the Anderson Police Department. He was subsequently charged as an adult with murder and attempted robbery. The Madison County Prosecutor's Office pursued the case, leading to Fleming's conviction on charges of murder, felony attempted armed robbery, and a firearm enhancement. A Madison County judge sentenced Fleming to a total of 64 years in the Indiana Department of Correction. In December 2023, the Indiana Court of Appeals upheld both the conviction and the lengthy sentence, ensuring that the person responsible for Andon's untimely death would be held accountable for his actions.
