In the winter of 2022, the life of 66-year-old Jerry Gray of Anderson, Indiana, came to an abrupt and violent end. On December 6th, Gray was found deceased inside his residence on West 27th Street, sparking a homicide investigation by local authorities. The events that led to this tragic outcome began with a chance encounter at a liquor store, where Gray met 34-year-old Jacob Fite, also of Anderson.
The two men decided to continue drinking at Gray's home, a decision that would prove
fatal. An altercation erupted between them, the details of which would later be recounted by Fite to investigators. According to Fite's account, the dispute escalated to the point where he claimed Gray attempted to stab him with what he described as a 'cheap and flimsy' bayonet. Fite stated that he reacted by punching Gray in the nose. After this initial confrontation, a brief calm ensued, and the two men continued to talk. However, the peace was short-lived. Fite alleged that Gray then armed himself with a second, more substantial bayonet from the Vietnam era. In response, Fite claimed he knocked Gray unconscious, a blow that ultimately led to his death.
Following the fatal encounter, Fite contacted his brother-in-law to pick him up from Gray's residence. It was during this time that Fite allegedly sought assistance in moving Gray's body. Instead of complying, his brother-in-law contacted the police, leading to Fite's swift arrest.
Jacob Fite was subsequently charged with aggravated battery and involuntary manslaughter in connection with Jerry Gray's death. In the ensuing legal proceedings, Fite accepted a plea deal which resulted in one of the charges being dropped. He was ultimately sentenced to five and a half years in prison for involuntary manslaughter.
