On the night of October 3, 2021, a dispute that began on the road in Anderson, Indiana, tragically ended the life of 46-year-old Raymond Waymire. A White/Caucasian male, Waymire was known as a kind-hearted man who was always willing to help others, a wonderful father, and a grandfather. He had a passion for working on cars and motorcycles and was enjoying a ride with his girlfriend when the fatal encounter occurred.
The incident started when a car nearly struck Waymire's motorcycle at an
intersection on Webster Street. Waymire pursued the vehicle and confronted its occupants at another intersection. An altercation ensued, and during this confrontation, a passenger in the car, 19-year-old Zachary Hileman, shot Waymire. The entire event was captured on a grainy video from a nearby house, showing the brief interaction before the car drove away. Waymire, after being shot, walked back toward his girlfriend, told her he had been shot, and then collapsed.
Following the shooting, Hileman fled the scene. However, approximately 19 hours later, he turned himself into the Anderson Police Department. He claimed that he shot Waymire in self-defense, stating that Waymire had punched him in the face during their exchange. Despite his claim, investigators did not observe any injuries on Hileman's face. Two other occupants of the car, who were juveniles, also told police that Waymire had struck Hileman.
Zachary Hileman was subsequently charged with murder and carrying a handgun without a license. In January 2023, a Madison County jury convicted Hileman of murder. He was later sentenced to 50 years in prison for his role in the death of Raymond Waymire. The other individuals in the car with Hileman were not charged in connection with the incident.
