George Stanley Oakley, a 70-year-old male, was a man who had dedicated his life to his country and his family. A veteran of the United States Marine Corps, he was a devoted father and grandfather who cherished spending quality time with his daughter and grandchildren. After his military service, he had a long career at Jenn-Air before retiring. He was born in Indianapolis, Indiana, on April 13, 1950, and received his education in the Indianapolis Public School system, graduating from Arsenal
Technical High School in 1968.
On January 15, 2021, a tragic event cut his life short. Lawrence Police Department officers were dispatched to a residence in the 11000 block of High Grass Drive in Indianapolis following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Mr. Oakley suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency responders, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into his death quickly focused on a suspect who was known to the family. Witnesses at the scene identified the shooter as Antawin Williams, a relative who had been staying in the basement of the residence where Mr. Oakley lived with his caretaker. According to witness statements, an argument had taken place after Williams came upstairs. Following the argument, Williams went into Mr. Oakley's bedroom and shot him multiple times.
Antawin Williams was subsequently arrested and faced legal proceedings for the murder of George Oakley. In September 2023, following a two-day court trial, Williams was convicted of Murder, Resisting Law Enforcement, and Carrying a Handgun Without a License. In October 2023, he was sentenced to 50.5 years in prison for his crimes. The Marion County Prosecutor's Office announced the conviction and sentencing, emphasizing their commitment to holding accountable those who inflict violence and suffering on the community.
