On March 15, 2021, a violent confrontation outside a high school in Merrillville, Indiana, claimed the life of 18-year-old Tyree Na'Quan Riley. The tragic sequence of events began around 12:15 a.m. in the parking lot of Merrillville High School, where two groups had gathered to settle a dispute. Reports indicate that the altercation stemmed from a disagreement involving a TikTok video and a young woman, which escalated into a planned fistfight between Riley and another individual from Michigan
City.
As the physical altercation concluded and the groups began to disperse, the situation took a deadly turn. Riley was riding in a vehicle attempting to leave the scene when shots were fired. Investigators determined that Leonard Young, a man from Michigan City who had accompanied the opposing group, discharged a weapon into the departing car. Riley was struck in the chest by gunfire, while the 19-year-old driver of the vehicle sustained a graze wound to the head. Despite efforts to save him, Riley succumbed to his injuries, cutting short the life of the Griffith High School graduate who was remembered by family and friends for his style and love of basketball.
Law enforcement officers quickly identified Leonard Young as the primary suspect in the shooting. Initially facing a murder charge for his role in the homicide, Young entered into a plea agreement with prosecutors in Lake County. In October 2021, the 20-year-old pleaded guilty to reduced charges, including reckless homicide and battery with a deadly weapon, both Level 5 felonies. Under the terms of the agreement, the murder charge was dismissed, and Young faced a potential sentence of up to 12 years in prison for his actions that night.
