In the early morning hours of October 3, 2019, the life of 17-year-old Jonas Smith was tragically cut short in Merrillville, Indiana. The young Black / African American male was discovered with gunshot wounds in the 4000 block of West 73rd Avenue. Despite the efforts of first responders, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 5:55 a.m. by the Lake County Coroner's Office. His death was officially ruled a homicide, sending ripples of grief and shock throughout the community.
