In the early morning hours of May 10, 2021, the life of 25-year-old Dashambe Ignacio Atkins was tragically cut short in Evansville, Indiana. The Vanderburgh County Coroner's Office confirmed his identity after a fatal shooting. At approximately 3:20 a.m., Evansville police were dispatched to the intersection of First Avenue and Virginia Street following reports of gunfire and a subsequent car crash.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered a vehicle that had crashed, and inside was
Atkins, who had succumbed to gunshot wounds. Investigators believe, based on the numerous shell casings found at the scene, that Atkins was shot while he was stopped at a traffic light. Following the barrage of bullets, his vehicle accelerated through the intersection before crashing.
At the time of the incident, law enforcement noted the similarity to another fatal shooting that had occurred just 48 hours prior in a different part of the city. The Evansville Police Department urged anyone with information regarding the shooting of Dashambe Ignacio Atkins to come forward and contact them or use their anonymous tip line. To date, there have been no public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in connection with his murder, leaving his case unsolved.
