In the summer of 2021, the life of Michael Joseph McDowell, a 65-year-old man, was tragically cut short in Indianapolis, Indiana. On July 3, 2021, McDowell was fatally shot in the head inside an apartment on the city's northeast side, near 42nd Street and Mitthoeffer Road. He was a man known for his willingness to help those less fortunate, a friend to all and a stranger to none, with a great sense of humor.
The investigation into his death led police to Daniel Rhodes.
During an interview with detectives, Rhodes reportedly confessed to the shooting, claiming he believed he was being set up. This confession, coupled with DNA evidence found at the scene that matched Rhodes, solidified the case against him.
Following a two-day trial in March 2024, Daniel Rhodes was found guilty of the murder of Michael McDowell. In April 2024, a judge sentenced Rhodes to 82 years in prison. This sentence included a 20-year enhancement due to his status as a habitual offender.
