Black / African American male Dominick Jerome Rice, 35, was fatally shot in Indianapolis, Indiana, during the early hours of July 4, 2021. The incident took place during Independence Day celebrations in a parking lot situated near the Vue Luxury Apartments on East Georgia Street. Rice was reportedly attending a gathering in the area when violence erupted, turning the holiday festivities into a crime scene.
According to reports, an unknown vehicle pulled into the lot where Rice and a
woman were present. A suspect exited the vehicle and opened fire on them before fleeing the scene. Rice sustained critical injuries during the ambush and was subsequently transported to Methodist Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The female victim was also struck by gunfire and taken to Eskenazi Hospital, where she was listed in stable condition following the attack.
Investigators with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department stated early in the inquiry that they did not believe the shooting was a random act. Despite the presence of witnesses in the general area due to the holiday, information regarding the identity of the shooter remained scarce in the immediate aftermath. As of the latest available public records, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with Dominick Rice’s death, leaving the case unresolved.
